ABC announced this morning that they won’t be ordering anymore episodes of their show, “Eastwick,” the TV spin off from the 80’s hit film, “The Witches of Eastwick.”
The show has had some decent numbers but the problem is that the network has had some real strong breakout hits, such as “Modern Family” and “Cougar Town,” which make the witch show look less than successful. And since they will be pumping more money into their hit shows, that doesn’t leave a whole lot of room in the budget for a show that isn’t spectacular.
Of course if “Eastwick” do some witchcraft and pull in some magical numbers while they are still on the air this could all change, but chances are their numbers will stay the same and that will mean the axe once their produced episodes run out.
My guess is that it was probably too big of a gap between the 80’s hit flick and now for them to pull in a strong fan base this season. Execs probably thought that witches could do some damage in the supernatural landscape of the movie and TV biz now with all the “True Bloods” and “Vampire Diaries” and “Twilights” taking a strong stand in the media…Even though everything goes in cycles in Hollywood and now seemed like the right cycle for a show like “Eastwick”, it seems just the same that witches are not as popular as Vampires these days.
Oh well. Sorry “Eastwick” and their fanbase. You’ll just have to take stock in the remaining episodes…
…and then switch to one of the Vampire shows afterwards to cushion the fall.
