Helen Mirren has signed on to play a part in her very first comic book film.

The Oscar winner (Best Actress for “The Queen”) will be portraying an assassin in Summit Entertainment’s adaptation of the Wildstorm/DC Comics miniseries entitled, “Red.”  Robert Schwenke is directing the project.

Mirren will be acting opposite Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis in the film that is about a former black-ops agent, played by Willis, who is now in retirement and has to contend with younger high-tech assassins who show up to kill him.  Mirren plays an old associate of Willis with a lethal set of skills.

DC’s Gregory Noveck will serve as an executive producer while Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producers on the project.  The title is expected to be a hot seller at AFM come Wednesday, the festivals opening day.

Mirren, who is repped at CAA, has recently finished several films, such as “The Tempest,” Julie Taymor’s take on the Shakespearean play, “The Debt” and “Love Ranch,” a drama directed by Taylor Hackford (her husband).

Mirren is always amazing in everything she does and this sounds like a great addition to her already stellar resume.  Hellen Mirren in a comic book movie?  Um, that’s awesome!

Can’t wait!
