gerard_butlerGerard Butler has signed on to star in Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut, “Coriolanus.”  The project is said to be a contemporary version of Shakespeare’s Rome-set political and family drama.

Butler is the lure for buyers at AFM as they are interested in a deal for the film’s rights.   The project is being repped by Icon Entertainment International at the film market festival.

Butler will be playing ‘Tullus Aufidius,’ commander of the Volscian army from Shakespeare’s play, as he teams up with a cast already in place, including Eddie Marsan, William Hurt, Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave.

The script was written by John Logan, who wrote “The Last Samurai,” “The Aviator” and “Sweeney Todd,” and is being produced by Julia Taylor-Stanley, an exec at Artemis Films, as well as Gabrielle Tana from Magnolia Mae Films and Colin Vaines from Synchronistic.

Set to begin shooting in Serbia in March.

With that team and cast in place, it sounds like it will be an interesting film from a great Shakespeare play.  Looking forward to seeing how this one comes out.
